Over the years, we have tried to reduce the use of plastic. We have been told that it is harmful to the environment, not only to future generations but also to wildlife, which has no choice.
Disposable plastic is one of the biggest culprits.
It is difficult for some to understand what effect it can have – something so dangerous that it can be so useful, such as a plastic bag or a plastic fork.
The Gumbo Limbo Nature Center recently shared a heartbreaking photo of a little turtle that died while caring for them.
The Boca Raton, Florida wildlife center says the tortoise was a “washback” turtle that went out into the ocean but then jumped ashore.
“We had 121 at our facility,” Whitney Crowder, the Marine Turtle Rehabilitation Coordinator, told the Sun-Sentinel. “I can not even count how many have passed. Dozens of people died. ”
What’s most saddening is that among the dozens of deaths, according to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, “100% of our unwashed washes had plastic in their intestinal tract.”
The center shared a picture of one of the turtles next to 104 pieces of plastic found inside the turtle.
“This is a sad reminder that we must all do our part to keep our oceans free of plastic,” they wrote.
As shocking as it is to believe that all 104 pieces came from the tortoise’s intestinal tract, which could fit in the palm of your hand, it is true.
According to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, turtles absorb plastic, which is trapped in septic shock.
Fortunately, there is a way to prevent this horrible sight.
Whether it is difficult, if not impossible to prevent washing, we can help improve their survival by properly removing the plastic,
reducing the amount of disposable plastic, collecting garbage, and putting it in the appropriate container.
